July 12, 2017

Red Oak Communications is honored to have played a pivotal role in the launch of Kenya’s groundbreaking National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) 2023-2027, Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) 2022-2050, and the Climate Change Act (Amendment 2023).

Event Overview: In a historic moment on September 4, 2023, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, the President of the Republic of Kenya, unveiled a comprehensive legal framework aimed at accelerating climate action in the nation. The launch showcased Kenya’s commitment to addressing climate change through a robust law and policy, reinforcing African leadership in this critical global challenge.

Key Initiatives:

  1. National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) 2023-2027:
    • The NCCAP outlines a strategic roadmap for mainstreaming and implementing climate change actions, serving as a key planning document. It covers seven priority climate action areas, encompassing adaptation and mitigation strategies across various sectors.
  2. Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) 2022-2050:
    • The LT-LEDS sets the stage for Kenya’s sustainable development by providing a visionary framework that extends to 2050. Aligned with the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), it positions Kenya for enhanced climate action, targeting a significant 32% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.
  3. Climate Change Act (Amendment 2023):
    • The amended Climate Change Act forms the legal backbone of Kenya’s commitment to climate action. It reflects the country’s readiness to support and implement the NDC, showcasing a comprehensive approach to climate change legislation.

International Collaboration:

  • Kenya’s engagement with the NDC Partnership, initiated in 2017, played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s climate policies. Supported by global entities such as the German government (BMZ), GIZ, EIB, EU, FAO, UK, UNDP, USAID, World Bank, and WRI, the Partnership facilitated technical analyses, nationwide consultations, and the institutionalization of reporting.

Recognition and Congratulations:

  • At the launch, NDC Partnership Global Director Dr. Pablo Vieira extended congratulations to Kenya for its commitment and leadership in addressing climate change, acknowledging the collaborative efforts that have resulted in the formulation and implementation of ambitious climate targets.

Red Oak Communications takes pride in contributing to the communication strategy that highlighted Kenya’s commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience through this landmark legal framework.
